Two Tom Petty Box Sets Coming Soon, Commemorating 40th Anniversary of Debut

In a cross-label move similar to the Stones stereo box sets from ABKCO and UMe, Tom Petty's complete vinyl catalog will be issued in two limited edition 180 gram box sets: one featuring his MCA output (1976-1991) and one covering his later Warner Brothers catalog (1994-2014).

Volume 1, to be released on December 9th includes nine albums on:

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers*
You’re Gonna Get It!*
Damn The Torpedoes*
Hard Promises
Long After Dark
Southern Accents
Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)
Full Moon Fever
Into The Great Wide Open

The asterisked titles were "remastered since 2010". The others were remastered just for this box set.

Volume 2, featuring seven albums on "twelve pieces of vinyl" ("Ba Ba Booey!") will be released November 25th. The albums are:

Wildflowers (2 LPs)
She's The One
Echo (2 LPs)
The Last DJ (2 LPs)
Highway Companion (2 LPs)
Mojo (2 LPs) * (Original 2010 master)
Hynotic Eye (Original 2014 master)

Original pressings of She's the One go for over $250.

The MCA box was cut by Chris Bellman with TP's engineer Ryan Ulyate at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the original analog master tapes and the records were pressed by QRP. PTL!!!!!!

Chris Bellman just emailed: he also cut the Warner Brothers box. He didn't say from what, but I assume the more recent TP albums were digitally recorded. However, I'm waiting for a response.l

Great news on mastering details! Given the good news it's maddening that the press release wouldnt have this as a headline.

Bummer to have to re-buy the first three when I already did as they came out (since 2010), but nice to see the rest of the MCA stuff. Wonder if the box have enough goodies to make me want to buy it, or if the individual albums will eventually be available?

Wildflowers and Highway Companion are solo records, weird to see them in a box with Heartbreakers albums?

She's the One, nice to finally see it maybe be available!
It has been backordered since:
Order Date: June 8, 2014

"The asterisked titles were "remastered since 2010". The others were remastered just for this box set."

Which would mean those titles are high-resolution digital files would it not? Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

I don't think full analog masters exist of the later albums. The last 2 for sure were entirely digitally recorded and mixed.

Very excited to see this. Im a huge fan of the work coming out of Grundman Mastering and QRP is an excellent plant. I will pick up the MCA Box, Wildflowers, and Shes The One. That ought to keep me busy listening for a while.

Really excited about Wildflowers on CB mastered vinyl, love that album.

Thanks for posting the mastering info Michael. Great "Bob" interview by the way!

...But Volume 2 on Nov 25? I take it that's 2017, yes?

Nope...2016! Exciting, huh?

I am really hoping that the second box is mastered by Chris and pressed at QRP (or RTI). As soon as you know Mr. Fremer, please let us know!

He cut the WB box too! Didn't say from what, but I imagine later TP albums were digitally recorded but when I hear back I'll amend the post.

Fantastic! I would assume the same, with Wildflowers being an analog source. Again, based on the High Res files the albums sound great, so I suspect the later albums will be in line with Mojo and Hypnotic Eye in terms of quality. :)

have to pay extra for all the bulging crotches?

As long as these albums are released individually in the not-too-distant future, I'll be a happy camper. I've already got most of them, and there's no way I could justify paying that much and getting a bunch of duplicates. I don't think I'm the only one who'd rather fill in the blanks piece by piece instead of putting down $250 at one pop. My kids need to eat, too.

If you're desperate to have vinyl versions of "She's the One" and the even more rare "Wildflowers" this is actually a good deal. I sold my spare "Wildflowers" for more than $300 last year. I might unload "She's the One" while the getting is good. I can live without it.

I will get that box as Christmas present
Is there anybody who knows whether the LPs were all pressed at QRP for the whole world except of course The first 2 ?

Thanks

Benoit
