Legacy Recordings Announces RSD "Black Friday" 2014 Limited Edition Releases

Despite some "blowback" from vinyl fans who think Record Store Day "limited editions" are manipulative and lead to speculation, the labels will be back at it this "Black Friday" November 28th, 2014, the day after Thanksgiving.

Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment announced a full compliment of vinyl specials both on LP and on singles, leading with "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)"/cw "Tis a Pity She's a Whore", a special 10" David Bowie single premiering two new Tony Visconti produced tracks that will be included on the 50 year Bowie retrospective set Nothing Has Changed that will be released November 18th.

The 50 year look back will be issued on both 59 song 3 CD and 39 song 2 CD sets and on 20 tune double vinyl that obviously will be short many tracks. However, the double LP set is hit heavy and obscure tune light. A smart choice for an LP running order! But a full rundown is best left for another time.

Wu-Tang Clan – “C.R.E.A.M.” 10" Die Cut Picture Disc on 120G Vinyl

The lyrical mastery and groundbreaking production technique of the Wu-Tang Clan changed the hip-hop scene forever. Legacy Recordings celebrates the 1994 release of their single “C.R.E.A.M.”—hailed as one of the greatest rap singles by The Source, Rolling Stone and Time—with a limited collectible vinyl single die-cut n the shape of the group’s iconic logo and backed with the single's original B-side “The Mystery Of Chessboxin’.”

Don't expect much or any of the vintage material to be sourced from analog tapes (but that could be wrong and we could be pleasantly surprised)—not that it matters in most cases, though it would be nice to have Muswell Hillbillys or any of The Kinks Katalog issued AAA. That project is long overdue!

I've rarely found a colored LP to sound truly good; the Fantasy green LP of A Charlie Brown Christmas issued a few RSDs back being perhaps the noisiest and overall worst sounding vinyl version I've ever heard of that classic.

In light of some of the colored vinyl releases above, anyone have a reason to think differently?

PVC is clear. Black or green or red or white is added to produce a color. What's more important is the vinyl formulation to begin with. The company making the quiet black pellets used by a pressing plant may not be the same one providing green or white ones. The translucent blue vinyl pressed at QRP is as quiet as the black vinyl pressings. So it would be a mistake to chalk up your noisy colored vinyl to toe colored vinyl!

Thanks, Michael - I knew you'd know.
