Roy Orbison The M-G-M Years 1965-1973 Box Set First Look

Here's a look at the new Roy Orbison The M-G-M Years 1965-1973 Box Set a thirteen LP set that includes all of Roy's long playing records plus a double LP of singles and unreleased tracks.

In this case, the remastering to 192/24 from the original three track tapes through a vintage analog board for the most part produces sonic results superior to the originals.

Why? Better EQ, more coherent mixes, far quieter vinyl pressed at GZ Media. A really nice set that will be fully reviewed here soon.

I really like the In Dreams song from Blue Velvet soundtrack. Not sure what version they used but would like to know.

Per audaud.com:
In 1969, Orbison recorded One Of The Lonely Ones for Universal. The 12-song collection, allegedly recorded secretly, never saw the light of day. The mystery of this non-release was not solved. It has been identified as a lost treasure. Now in conjunction with the release of The MGM Years box set (that includes a 14 LP Vinyl Set and a 13-CD Box Set), One Of The Lonely Ones has finally (under the watchful eyes of Orbison’s family) been released on 12-4-2015. Now re-mastered on 180-gram stereo vinyl recording, the album has a modern technical format.L

But it is not part of the box.

Thanks so much Michael for the Anecdotes about Roy. I love the sound that Bill Porter got with him. The productions are so lush and natural sounding.

Purchasing from Amazon UK is easy, though there are some things to be aware of.

Most credit card companies charge a currency conversion fee for charges in a foreign currency to US dollars. Amazon will offer you the option to pay in US dollars versus Pounds Sterling, but then Amazon will charge you the conversion fee. Check the fees if any with your credit card company.

While music is typically not subject to import duties, any purchase over $200 is subject to a small (by my standards) fee. The duty fee is typically collected at time of delivery.

If your purchase selects the cheapest shipping option (Royal Mail), expect a 3 to 5 week wait for it to arrive. Do not believe the estimated arrival date on the Amazon web page. I assume the delay is a result of processing time by US Customs (or other government agency). You may note that your delivered package may or may not have been opened for possible inspection.

If you must return the order to Amazon you must typically pay the shipping costs to return the entire item - not cheap.

While it is true prices shown on Amazon UK include VAT and VAT costs will be deducted, the cheapest shipping fees tend to increase the price to that listed on the item page.

Other small items of note -

You will find your Amazon account information is the same for all Amazon locations throughout the world. Be sure to add 'USA' to your shipping address. If decide to pay in Pounds Sterling or Euros, you will find your Amazon account in the USA will now default to that foreign currency. Be careful or you may find yourself paying for a currency conversion fee unless you change it back to US dollars.

Purchasing from an Amazon retailer outside the USA can be an effective way to save some dollars sometimes. If you don't mind the long wait and other finer points of importing, it's a viable method.

There are sound samples (about 3 songs) off the cd version of this box on Youtube and they are GREAT.

I would declare that some of his MGM-era songs - "Where Is Tomorrow", "Blue Rain Coming Down", "Truly Truly True" are as good as or better than anything from his Monument years.

hearing you describe Roy hitting "that note" at the Beacon Theatre.

That was your most impassioned presentation ever. Your love of Roy's music came through loud and clear. Personally I never "got" Roy however based on your video I may pickup some of the earlier Monument recordings.
Now I expect the same heartfelt presentation if they ever release the complete box of my favorite Hawkwind :)

One of the most impressive vinyl demos I ever heard was back in the very late 80s at a big HiFi show in a downtown Chicago hotel.
Sorry can't remember a darn thing about the gear but the sound of Roy's Black And White Night recording was impressive, a great sounding mastering. If you do vinyl it's a R2D4
On the way hope I immediately picked up the superior sounding CD.

I fully enjoyed your "impassioned" review of the great Roy Orbison and this box set. Hard to argue that he had one of the greatest male voices of all time. I will be ordering this. Thanks!
