TT Weights Commences Kickstarter Project For Technics SL-1200 Periphery Record Clamp

TT Weights' Larry Denham recently announced a Kickstarter project to fund the tooling necessary to manufacture a peripheral ring/record clamp for the ubiquitous (but currently no longer manufactured) Technics SL1200 turntable.

The 'table's fan club is legion, so this project should prove very successful but one can't blame Mr. Denham for trying to get it pre-funded. Contributors at various levels will receive attractive rewards. Go to the campaign website for more details.

Denham says the new ring will fit Will fit the following Technics Turntables: SL1210 M5G, SL1200 MK2, MK3, MK3D, MK5 & M5G. It will also fit the Audio Technica Series AT-LP1240 (USB)i and Pioneer's PLX-1000.

As for the value of such an outer ring, that cannot be denied. If it's good enough for the $150,000+ Onedof 'table and for VPI and, indeed Mr. Denham's own 'tables, it should be equally efficacious on the 1200. I had one manufactured for my Simon Yorke turntable and I recommend one if you're willing to put up with a bit of hassle.

so didn't read the full post sorry!

Will this also fit the numark ttx? It's essentially another technics clone in the same vein as the audio technica & pioneer, albeit a funky looking one with a much beefier motor. My concern is really the track light although that can be removed if necessary

This may be a good thing as the VPI equivalent is now @ $999 MSRP.

...Timestep Evo turntable?

At a reasonable price??
Most of these rings I see go for 500$ up....

The price is F'ing outrageous. It's a circular piece of metal. I just can't believe it's that hard to make.

And BTW, I own a TT weights outer ring clamp. An 1150gr. copper one, bought it from Tom Port, paid $500 for it, and yes I think I overpaid.

If you think the price is outrageous and it's easy to make, then make one and sell it for less and the audiophile community will beat a path to your door.

You do well, we all benefit.

Sure, I don't have any source for the raw materials, and nothing to cut with other than a steak knife.... otherwise, great idea. :)

However, for somebody else with access to these things, I sense an opportunity.

That's what makes capitalism wonderful; if someone can make a cartridge that sounds like a Lyra Atlas for $1000, the world will beat a path to their door, too; there were many, many MP3 players on the market before Steve Jobs decided there must be a "better way" and decided to create the iPod.

Criticizing product prices is easy, but recognizing all the costs that went into it and must be recouped is a worthwhile exercise.

He told me they are a PITA to produce, and got tired of it. I think he only charged me $200. In retrospect, it was the best audio accessory, for the money, I've purchased. I also compared rings to vacuum hold-down, and it seems that rings can sound better, though vacuum is easier to use. The TT Weights prices aren't crazy though. A currently produced vacuum turntable costs a lot more.

So, you think it's easy to make? How are you going to "chuck" 14~15" diameter bar stock? Are you going to take the "easy way out" and cut it on a mill? How do you guarantee your work piece isn't going to "push-off" while trying to hold a very thin piece of metal, without also damaging it in the process? Do you have a machine with good "ways", and dimensional accuracy to at least 0.001"? How are you going to guarantee a smooth surface using your Walmart machine shop? Do you have a 16" set of calipers to even check if your ring is actually round? Until you have a lathe that can hold bar stock that effing big, it isn't easy to make. "Easy to make" means 20 minutes of design (realistic) and under 30 minutes of machining time. With aluminum, you can rough cut something like this in a couple minutes, but the surface finish will be shit.

I'm not a customer of TT Weights. I'm an importer, and technically a competitor. What they do isn't "easy". They make it look "easy" because they have, I assume, a few million dollars in quality tooling.

I worked in an AS9100 certified machine shop, making parts for Halliburton and Raytheon, among others, and we would've charged an aerospace customer a couple grand, at least, for something like this. If you buy one from China, make sure you can return it if it isn't nearly perfectly round and flat to within .001". If it isn't flat, it will rattle against the vinyl on low spots, and now your flattener is a noise maker. Congratulations on your "bargain".

Cheers!
