AnalogPlanet Radio Returns With New Host Malachi Lui

Recently, I presented the idea to AnalogPlanet editor Michael Fremer that I could do my very own online radio show to post on AnalogPlanet. I could transfer most of the songs from vinyl, stitch them together, and speak in between DJ sets. MF said “try it and let’s see how it turns out.”

Now, I finally have my first radio show prepared, with 15 songs spanning genres and time periods from the late 1950s to today. In addition, you get to hear yours truly speak for an excruciating 13 total minutes between sets.

Vinyl transfers were done at 44.1kHz/24bit using my system of a Rega P3 (2016 model), Ortofon MC Quintet Black S, and MoFi Electronics UltraPhono preamp. I used budget RCA-1/4" cables to connect the output of the UltraPhono to the inputs of the ZoomR8 mixer, which I then connected to Audacity with a USB cable. Three songs in this show are from CD-quality sources - those being Vampire Weekend's "Sunflower," Stereolab's "French Disco (Early Version Mix)," and Tyler, the Creator's "Boredom." Those 16 bit files are upsampled in the 24bit AIFF download of the show below. (An MP3 version is also available).

Tracklist

Jon Hassell/Brian Eno - “Chemistry”
Talking Heads - “Once In A Lifetime”
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - “Little Wing”
Vampire Weekend & Steve Lacy - “Sunflower”
Noname & Adam Ness - “Prayer Song”
Marvin Gaye - “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)”

Wayne Shorter - “Indian Song”

(Some songs contain explicit lyrics)

i've loved the kids see ghosts (and also loving last saba, earl sweatshirt, no name, all dilla and other trippy shit). seems like you're on an eno kick! good stuff. have you seen the music video for "once in a lifetime"? all time classic! familiar with all these great tracks except for vampire weekend & brockhampton, but in confidence with your other excelellent choices, i'm super psyched to check these out!!! on my fairly state of the art system, i can assure you, your system is sounding clear and balanced.

KIDS SEE GHOSTS vinyl turned out excellent, much better than expected. I'm actually listening to Earl's "Some Rap Songs" now. It's a great album once it grows on you.

I've seen the music video for "Once In A Lifetime" - insane!

It's good that my system is sounding good on someone else's system!

i'm michael's friend btw, who got you hooked up with my boy charley, and his chocolate factory. he's one of my best buds from college. put some time in there and one day he'll have you making the chocolate! :)

Well, on my old, vintage, pretty low end Onkyo system dating back to the 1980s, it sounds amazing too!
Nice in the lows and the high as well. Going to check as well on my Klipsch speakers with a tube amp.

Well, I did a direct comparison of Marvin Gay's Mercy Mercy Me of your recording with my European pressing on vinyl on my Klipsch speakers with a tube amp.
Yours is much more intense in the low regions (really smooth and warm), while mine is sharper/harsher in the high end. I dowloaded the your mp3 file on my Aamzon Fire Tablet and used that for playback too. Not the best DAC, I know, but still it was a joy to listen to.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the positive feedback! Is your EU pressing of "What's Going On" an older pressing or a newer digitally-sourced pressing?

Dear Michael,
I just found out that this 'kid' is just 12 years old.
I am baffled by this.
Please give him a monthly returning feature on analogplanet.
It will take you out of you comfort zone - even though I don't know if that is even possible ;-)
But besides that, the kid is very talented - not so much a protégé, but rather a prodigy!
And he's got one big advantage compared to us, old guys: his young ears can pick up frequencies that are lost to us due to old age.

Give him a forum for his talent, ok!

He's 13... he has reviewed a number of records (Coltrane "lost album", Jack White, etc.) as well as equipment you can access by searching under his name. Also check out the AnalogPlanet YouTube channel for our videos together....

Any chance the old AP Radio shows pre-october can be reposted?

All are available under the "Music" drop down menu at the top of the home page.

I was going to the Soundcloud page. Thanks so much!

I hope Malachi can go to AXPONA.

MalachiLui's picture

I won't be able to make it to AXPONA this year but Michael and I will be doing something very special soon that hopefully will be posted! I can't give too many details as that would take the fun mystery away!

Lazer's picture

I’m looking forward to seeing the “mystery” revealed.

I've been writing here since August and I first appeared on the YouTube channel in July. I've posted at least one article or review a month since I've started, and I'm not slowing down any time soon! I posted two equipment reviews and one news article in February, and I'm working on more stuff for March right now. Stay tuned!

I love me some space aged bachelor pad muzak. Check out Pram if you haven't already. Specifically "The Museum of Imaginary Animals."

Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, the new Michael Jackson doc. is controversial ... but creepy.
Take home lesson:
Regardless of intention, don't get involved with kids. YOU'LL REGRET IT LATER.
Sorry ... this is he whacky "Me Too" effed up culture that we live in.

Michael Fremer's picture
So no teachers, no mentors, no coaches, no Boy or Girl Scouts? What are you talking about?
Tom L's picture

The "culture we live in" certainly has problems, but it's your comment and attitude that's "effed up". Why drag pedophilia into a civilized discussion of music that has nothing to do with that sad subject? Just because Malachi is younger than the typical audiophile, I guess...but any problem that might cause exists only in your own mind.

FvkedVpRoman's picture

"but any problem that might cause exists only in your own mind."

Hey Toots:
I'm sure MJ was thinkin' the same thing ... and then the past was catchin' up on him ... so, in 2009, the 'phile decide to OD on some pillz.
At least some of those kidz are cashin' in now ...

MalachiLui's picture

Are you okay? I don't think so. There's no problem with younger people having older mentors/friends if their relationship stays within the appropriate boundaries (which mine with MF does). Maybe you're paranoid after somebody molested you, but no matter what happened, there's still something wrong with you. Heck, you can't even spell the f-word correctly in your username!

It's really sad how our society gets so easily freaked out when they see people with large age differences hanging out and shout "sexual abuse" when there's nothing bad/illegal happening. I wonder if it would be different if "Leaving Neverland" never reminded us about MJ's wrongdoings, because people seem even more freaked out after that.

FvkedVpRoman's picture

Hi MalachiL (or is it Macaulay),

Those boyz from Neverland certainly dragged their feet before making the charge. Kudos for their creativity in cashin' in.

As far MJ .... oh, the pressure ... the pills .... THE END.
His boyz drove him to it ... and are collectin' the reward.
MJ was absolutely a f--k up on multiple levels. Did you see all the TOUCHING in the uncensored Black or White video?

Get some help, it will improve your life.

FvkedVpRoman's picture

....great advice, toots. Thanks!!

Lazer's picture

You seem to be shrugging off the advice. That is a mistake on your part. You really do need help.

FvkedVpRoman's picture

....great advice, toots. Thanks!!

MichaelTrei's picture

If you pause the video at 4.42 you can see MJ's hand on Culkin's arm for 1/4 of a second. Is that what really bothers you? Lord help us.

Malachi, I'm glad you're DJing here at Analog Planet! Thanks for sharing your musical taste with us. At 68 years old, I'm still looking for new music to love, and appreciate opportunities to broaden my taste. Still, though, the fact that the first three tracks you queued up are lifetime favorites of mine puts a smile on my face.

One suggestion, though, is that I'd like to see the album name added to the track name and artist that you are already providing.

Carry on, good sir. :)
