A throwback to the 60s British folk scene that produced The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Shirley and Dolly Collins and dozens of others, Scottish folksinger Alasdair Roberts brings a spare purity to his original folk balladry.

Sorry, this is not a giveaway contest. However, if you have sufficiently deep pockets ($3499 if you sign up now, $3999 after August 1st) you can spend a four day, extended weekend, Thursday, November 6th through Sunday November 9th, 2014 with four of the greatest producer/engineers of our time (or any time) at the Power Station/New England Studios in Waterford, CT.

I’ll tell you how I got into medieval era dance music similar to what’s on this record and on la Spagna: back in 1969 when I worked in the downstairs record store division of Minuteman in Harvard Square, a salesman named Duane who worked upstairs selling audio gear I could not at the time afford, insisted I buy a record on Deutsche Grammophone’s Archive Production label.

Peter Gabriel has authorized and provided the tracks for a "Music Tiles" iPhone/iPad app that allows anyone to remix tunes from his "So" album.

Viewers of late night American television during the 1970s and 1980s surely know Romanian pan-flutist Zamfir. His albums were direct marketed all over the tube back then. The ads were kitschy, with Zamfir playing pan flute versions of standards. The vibe was Liberace on a pan flute—an image I apologize for leaving you with.

Osaka, Japan-based Zanden Audio added a third phono preamplifier to its line with the $7,500 Model 120, a solid state LCR RIAA design using Jensen dual tap step-up transformers with 60dB and 71dBs of gain and input impedances of 36 ohms and 470 ohms respectively.

Zanden introduced its new Model 120 prototype phono preamp, the company's first solid-state design. The estimated price is $7500. I have no more details to report other than that it sounded good playing a Buddy Guy lacquer I brought to the show.

And this is how you do it correctly!: Supervised by the ZFT, the record was specially mastered for this release by Bernie Grundman with all analog production and cut directly from the 1970 ¼” stereo safety master tape in 2018.

Before getting to the image above, let's reiterate some cartridge set-up facts: despite the instructions that accompany most turntables and tone arms, you can't reliably set stylus rake angle to 92 degrees by putting your tone arm parallel to the record surface. Insuring that the cantilever is perpendicular to the record surface does not mean you've correctly set azimuth. Why do the manufacturers tell you to do those things? To make set up simple, instead of telling you what you need to do to accurately set these critical parameters.
