Funny thing about Consumer Electronics Shows—consumers aren't allowed to attend. That's what's great about Stereophile's annual HI-FI Show. The place is packed with real people—excited, paying customers—eager to see and hear the latest in hi-fi and home-theater gear. At least, that's what one hopes for.

Some in the industry hesitated about showing in Chicago. As far as turnout was concerned, the city and surrounding 'burbs were unknown quantities; the grand but aged Palmer House Hilton, with its boxy rooms and ancient wiring, was potentially tricky; and the strong union presence meant that moving a parcel across the hall could prove lethal to an exhibitor's checkbook.

"Nilsson Sings Newman" Issued By Speakers Corner on Quiet Vinyl For the First Time

Warner Brothers put Randy Newman on a college tour in 1969 with Ry Cooder and Captain Beefheart. The idea was to familiarize college kids with the label's eclectic artistic mix.

I saw this crazy musical mashup in the Boston University gymnasium but I was already familiar with Randy Newman. I'd bought his first album in 1968 because his photo on the cover reminded me of me in 1964.

"Tapestry" at 45rpm Forty Plus Years Later Sounding Better Than Ever

In 1972 and '73 you'd hear this classic album playing in every hippie crash pad and college dorm room in America. It was a "chick" album guys could dig. Her friend James Taylor had encouraged the veteran song writer to sing her own songs.

Despite her Brill Building songwriting accomplishments that included everything from "The Locomotion" to "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" (covered here too)—the list could go on for webpages— King remained in the background and thought of herself more like an early '60s housewife in the Laura Petrie mold than as a free-spirited artist.

Whatever happened to the vinyl issue of Sinatra '57 on vinyl??

That would have been a great release. Any chance of MoFi including it in their current series?

Which by the way, in my opinion better the original in every issue so far.

Michael,

Would a maple block between the top of an arcici suspense rack with air bladders and a VPI TNT improve sound quality?

I was talking with Ayre's Charlie Hansen shortly after buying my K-1 preamp when the subject of stands came up.

"Solid maple," he said to me. "That's what I'd use."
