When this record was issued in 1976, 47 year old Betty Carter (born Lillie Mae Jones) had already sang with Dizzy, Miles, Lionel Hampton, Sonny Rollins and many others.
Her choppy, aggressive, improvisatory style and intense scatting made for difficult listening for a mainstream audience, but she was beloved by beboppers and musical insiders considered her among, if not thegreatest female jazz singer of her era. Of course that could be said of Shirley Horn, Nina Simone and some others, who are probably better known.

Listening to a straightforward, blues/gospel-drenched comping session like this reminds you that jazz has lost its soul today and aims mostly for the head. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s good to get back to the essential, visceral nature of the genre. It’s easy to understand why a cut-up rocker with one foot in metal and the other in Vaudeville like David Lee Roth would break out of Van Halen and go solo with a faithful cover of Louis Prima’s version of “Just a Gigolo”/”I’m So Lonely.”

You had to be there, and I was.
Not at this Santa Monica, California performance from October 20th 1972, but at Bowie’s legendary September 28th Carnegie Hall appearance as well as at shows in Boston (Music Hall, October, 1st), Chicago (Auditorium Theater, October 7th), and Detroit (Fisher Theater, October 8th). Iggy Pop sat a few seats away at that one (and stayed in room 405 at the St. Regis Hotel that night).
