When it comes to recordings of the blues, there are different pockets of reissue-related activity that remain of interest to many music enthusiasts these days. Three new recent LP upgrades from three different iconic names span several generations of interest — namely, mid-20th-century icons John Lee Hooker and Memphis Slim along with Furry Lewis, who began recording in 1927. Read Mark Smotroff’s combo Short Cuts review to see if BMG’s new reissue of Hooker’s 1992 Pointblank/Charisma album Boom Boom, along with Craft Recordings’ Bluesville Series reissues of both pianist Memphis Slim’s 1959 Vee-Jay debut At The Gate of Horn and acoustic fingerpicking/slide guitarist Furry Lewis’ 1961 Prestige/Bluesville LP Back on My Feet are all worthy of buying and spinning. . .

Sounds caress my ear and the story is quite clear, as Led Zeppelin have just announced plans for how they’re going to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 1975’s seminal double-album extravaganza Physical Graffiti. This week, we’re cueing up a newly released 2LP set in order to revisit music from an acclaimed indie artist via an album we had only heard on CD (and digitally) before it got its most welcome analog upgrade. The ostensibly self-titled album, Nourallah Brothers, is a sprawling, expanded 26-track collaboration initially released with 10 fewer tracks in 2001, and it’s the brainchild of Texas-based indie artist and jack of many aural trades Salim Nourallah, along with key contributions from his brother Faris Nourallah. Read on to see why the atmospheric, intimate, wide-stereo sounds of Nourallah Brothers make this 2LP set an immediate, on-the-table winner. . .

“You put the load right on me.” That’s a line from The Band’s seminal 1968 song “The Weight,” which never actually mentions its title by name in the lyrics — but that above-noted key phrase, which serves as the linchpin line of its chorus, could also be the first thought an LP has the moment you put a record weight on top of it for stabilization purposes. (Go with me on this one, folks, and don’t just call me Crazy Chester.) One such manufacturer, Origin Live, have just literally dropped their next record weight, rightly dubbed the Gravity Two. Read on to see the features and specs of the Gravity Two, and how it builds upon the success of its predecessor, the Gravity One. . .

On Record Store Day earlier this year on April 12, 2025, one of those blink-and-you-missed-it releases was the first-time official vinyl pressing of Elton John’s 1977 performance for BBC Radio, Live From the Rainbow Theatre With Ray Cooper — but now, Rocket/Mercury/UMR has deigned to make it available to one and all via a much wider release. Read Mark Smotroff’s review of this fine 180g LP — with an album-cut-oriented tracklist personally selected by Sir Elton himself — to see why Live From the Rainbow Theatre is indeed quite worthy of being on your turntable. . .
