(Corrected) Beginning to Get Answers on Bert Jansch Vinyl Mystery (Apologies to Lurssen Mastering)

My apologies to Gavin Lurrsen, who did respond immediately to my email via email. Unfortunately his email got trapped in the overaggressive corporate spam filter.

"Heartbreak" Is Right! How Did This Happen???? (Pressing plant correction)

The back story here is almost as interesting as the music on this just reissued, long out of print Bert Jansch album first released in 1982.

It begins with a couple of Southern California kids back in 1967—brothers— taken with Bert Jansch's music, having been obliquely alerted to it through one's love of Donovan's music. Two songs piqued his curiosity: "Bert's Blues" and "House of Jansch".

Chicago "Field Recordings" Continue to Excite the Senses

When we think of "field recordings" we often think of Alan Lomax trudging through the South with a tape recorder, setting up shop wherever he found the music.

This set produced by blues historian Samuel Charters and first issued in 1966 is sort of a "field recording" except that the recordings took place at RCA's old lakeside studios, December of 1965. It's a "field recording" in the sense that Charters' goal was to document what was happening in the small clubs dotting the South side of Chicago.

"Rock Of Ages" Even Better in Retrospect

Recorded late 1971 during a multi-night gig at New York City's Academy of Music and released the next summer, Rock of Ages was intended to be a celebratory send-off for one of the greatest bands of that era as it contemplated a long touring and recording break that went on for far longer than expected.

Most of the tracks here were culled from the final New Year's Eve concert (Garth Hudson breaks into "Auld Lang Syne" in the midst of the "Chest Fever" intro) that was nothing short of magical. Whether or not the songs here were tracked as performed isn't clear, not that it matters.

In the recent news item about a replacement for the no longer manufactured Per Madsen Rackit record storage racks, we wondered whether they were of equal quality. So when Tribute Rack manufacturer Jef Fowler of Portland, OR's Two Can HiFi emailed and offered to send a review sample, I refused.
