Hampton Hawes’ Four! Is Another Spirited 180g Entry in Craft Recordings’ Acoustic Sounds Series, Thanks to a QRP-Pressed, All-Analog Master by Bernie Grundman

In some ways, it is curious that Craft Recordings has chosen to reissue Hampton Hawes’ 1958 outing Four! (exclamation point very much included) as the first entry in his Acoustics Sounds series, as Hawes’ earlier quartet sessions with guitarist Jim Hall were apparently highly regarded back in the day. Personally, I’m glad they have reissued this album — today being its official release date, in fact — as it is a spirited set that, frankly, sounds quite wonderful.

QRP-Pressed 180g Vinyl Reissue of Bill Evans Trio’s Trio ’65 Does Full Justice to a Laid Back, Forward-Leaning & Quite Dynamic Recording

When I saw one of the latest Acoustic Sounds Series reissues of a mid-1960s Bill Evans Trio album — namely, June 1965’s Trio ’65 — I had to pause for a moment and think: Do I really need this one in my collection?

Said moment lasted about 5 seconds, as I quickly remembered that (a) there are not really any bad Bill Evans records, and (b) finding clean originals of many of his albums is not an easy task on the used market.

Reviewing The Very Best of The Beach Boys: The Sounds of Summer, the massive new 60th Anniversary 6LP Beach Boys box set retrospective from UMe/Capitol/Brother Records, has been a daunting yet fun challenge. For perspective, the official press release establishes a baseline appeal for this expanded incarnation of The Very Best of The Beach Boys: The Sounds of Summer, which we’re quoting here below in italics for added perspective:

Reviewing The Very Best of The Beach Boys: The Sounds of Summer, the massive new 60th Anniversary 180g 6LP Beach Boys box set retrospective from UMe/Capitol/Brother Records, has been a daunting yet fun challenge. That said, having its contents mixed and mastered by the band’s longtime engineer/archivist Mark Linett has enabled a remarkable continuity from track to track — no small task, given the diversity of music and technological differences in recording across a 60-year period.
