Yellow Magic Orchestra: Prologue

This week, AnalogPlanet begins a multi-part exploration of Japanese synthpop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). Through reviews of their core releases and YMO-era side projects, we’ll dissect how, by incorporating elements of exotica, video game music, musique concrete, and more, the trio of Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, and Ryuichi Sakamoto transformed electronic music. They gained massive success in Japan but are also credited for influencing hip-hop and Detroit techno. First, however, we’ll explore the individual members’ pre-YMO work.

Glaring errors in music criticism, whether out of ignorance, misunderstanding, rushed deadlines, personal happenings, or whatever else, are at some point in the fields unfortunately commonplace; at some point in the field, you’re bound to make mistakes. When revisiting my past reviews, I balked at my original review of The 1975’s 2020 double LP art pop extravaganza Notes On A Conditional Form. Back then, I called it “frontman Matty Healy’s overblown vanity project [...] a miserably scattered, fake deep musical torture session.” How did that happen? Before dissecting my oversight, however, I’ll provide extended context and a much-needed reassessment.

The Records You Didn’t Know You Needed---#6: Tubby Hayes The Fontana Albums (1961-1969) Eleven LP Box Set Part 4

This is the sort of thing at which AnalogPlanet excels. Tubby was a great player who deserved more attention than he received during his lifetime and this reissue and review are timely redress.

It's causing me a bit of heartburn, though: I have three of these albums (plus Mexican Green on CD) and while $200 may be good value, the duplication makes it a non-starter for me. Any idea if these will be made available separately at some point?

that the British jazz scene from the mid 50s thru the 60s was rife with heroin casualties. I suppose they'd heard about their American heroes and assumed greatness lay at the end of the needle.
I have the Tempo recordings and Mexican Green on CD and Tubby (plus Graham Bond for rhythm & blues) were the bright hopes countering the strong (and stodgy) traditional influences on the scene. Of course, all their efforts were swept aside by the Beatles juggernaut and the rise of rock music as the major artistic outlet.

Hayes was a winner for sure... Individual LPs would be great to see... 11 LPs are Tubby overkill for my collection
