What's a story like this doing in an analog space? While it's a news item covering a new digital product, I was honored to be the only American audio writer invited to the launch so while the piece will be published in Stereophile, I decided to post it here as well. I hope you find at least the history of Marantz interesting, but also the concept of downloading DSD files from the Internet and playing them back from a computer. In any case, I think of music services like Spotify and Pandora the "Evatone sheets" of our digital era. You can use them to audition new music before dropping your hard earned cash on the vinyl version.—Ed.

In this case, going down the road wherever leads directly to your turntable. To wit: Mark Knopfler’s The Studio Albums 2009-2018, a 180g 9LP box set, will be released on October 7, 2022 by UMe/EMI. Read on for more details about who mastered it, who cut it, and what’s on it. . .

A reader forwarded a new video showing Mark Knopfler, who had recorded his share of albums digitally, back in the studio recording to analog tape using tube compressors to achieve the desired sound based on sound not necessarily the latest technology.

It’s been a minute since we’ve done regular book reviews here on AP, but now we’re back on the reading track. Thanks to an analogplanet.com reader's excellent suggestion, the blind mat test will include the original 96/24 file from which the Chasing the Dragon LP was cut. Recording engineer and label owner Mike Valentine was kind enough to send the original file of the Vivaldi "Concerto For Two Mandolins" that was used for the mat recordings.

Thanks to all who downloaded and listened to the same track played using 8 different mats. That's a great deal of heavy lifting, hopefully made somewhat lighter by Mike Valentine's excellent Decca tree recording of a nimble performance of Vivaldi's "Concerto For 2 Mandolins". I hope you downloaded and enjoyed the "gift" track too.

Instead of the usual "song and dance", the email refreshingly got directly to the point: "Will you review my record?". I replied, "Send it and if I like it I will."
