Whether covering Robert Johnson, Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams or The Monkees (Boyce and Hart), Cassandra Wilson’s sultry, commanding voice has always worked effectively set against spare, moody backdrops.
Back in March while out in Los Angeles to help with the Audio Fidelity TRON reissue, I followed up on Al Schmitt's invitation to visit him at Capitol Studios where he was working on a still secret all-analog production. Schmitt took me on a tour of Capitol 's famous studios—the site of so much recorded history—and I captured most of it on video.
T.H.E. Show Newport opening today, Friday, May 29th with the longest lines ever seen in the show's history. The new venue, Hotel Irvine, is a larger, more show-friendly spot that's sure to please both participants and attendees.
This year's Newport show was easily the best yet, in great part because of the new Hotel Irvine venue—a much larger and more "user friendly" hotel than the previous dual-hotel location. The attendance was way up, too.
T.H.E. Show Newport Beach 2013 is underway and coverage will begin later today. I participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony with John Atkinson, Robert Harley and Dr. David Robinson wearing the GoPro camera so you could see the event from my perspective but the camera was accidentally set to 'still' and I didn't get the video.
After attending the industrial strength Munich High End Show, any other audio show anywhere would probably be somewhat of a letdown. I attended T.H.E. Show Newport Beach 2013 with little expectation of analog news.
A young reader inherited a turntable and asked about a modestly priced system he could assemble around it. We know where this will lead and we can all cheer him on, mindful of the fun and fetishing to follow. And we can all sympathize with his bank account—assuming he has one!
We think of "field recordings" as vital ancient musical history, primitively captured. These "field recordings" dating from the 1990s were recorded using a pair of Bruel & Kjaer 4165 microphones and B&K power supply, Cello preamp, Apogee 1000 ADC and a Nagra D digital recorder given by Mark Levinson (the man) to producer Timothy Duffy .
Henry Saint Clair Fredericks A/K/A Taj Mahal grew up in Harlem, spent time as a teenager on a Massachusetts dairy farm, attended U of M, gigged around and finally headed west and built a musical career first in Los Angeles and later in the Bay area. The life influences come through in his music: a mix of urban and country blues mixed with world music.
I met up at AXPONA with SOTA's Kirk and Donna Bodinet. They were part owners in the company for many years, buying the company outright from Jack Shafton in 1997, when depending upon your perspective, it was vinyl's nadir, or the beginning of its resurgence.
